Shapewear doesn’t just have to be for women who have something to hide. It’s a great way to enhance the curves you do have while hiding any problem areas you’re not quite as confident about.
Shapewear can be used with any outfit under the sun – from very casual to a very formal. But how do you go about finding that perfect fit? That’s what we’re here for. Take a look at our 5 tips on wearing shapewear right and you’ll be rocking it in no time flat:
#1: Get measured by a pro.
Many women’s shapewear doesn’t fit right (and in turn, bunches in all the wrong places), simply because they’ve never been professionally measured. Spend some extra time going to a specialty lingerie store – or the lingerie area of a department store – to get measured by a professional. You won’t regret it.
Some women choose a garment one size below what they should be wearing because they assume it’ll give them additional support. It actually does the opposite. The garment will fit incorrectly and will end up making you uncomfortable throughout the day so make sure you wear something true to your size.
#3: Try several different brands.
Your size can vary quite a bit based on brand, so make sure to choose the same garment from a few different brands to get a feel for what’s best for you.
#4: When trying shapewear on, move around.
When you’re trying on different pieces of shapewear, move around and try the normal positions you’ll do throughout the day – like sitting down, kneeling, bending your knees, reaching up, etc. If anything feels especially uncomfortable, you may want to switch sizes or switch to another brand entirely.
#5: Obey our “perfect fit” checklist.
The last thing you want is to be uncomfortable throughout the day, so be sure to ask yourself these questions before heading to the cash register.
- Do my legs feel comfortable? If you’re trying on pantyhose, sit down and cross your legs to make sure they don’t cut into your thighs.
- Does the waist stay in place? Sit down, bend over and raise your arms to make sure the waist of your hose stays in place. If it doesn’t, consider another size.
- Does it lay smooth? Your shapewear should lay down smooth in all areas. If there are bulges anywhere, you should adjust your size.
- Do I feel any discomfort? This final question is broad, but important. If your shapewear feels too tight or too loose on any part of your body, consider switching to a different size. Shapewear should tone while being comfortable for you to wear – so don’t settle for anything less.
These five golden rules can make the difference between a miserable day and a day where you feel confident and sexy. Keep them in mind before you head out to shop for the perfect shapewear.About the Author: Cindy Prosser’s perfect morning starts with a hot cup of coffee, cool temperatures, and her favorite shapewear + skirt combo.
